What is a special drain still?
A still is a copper instrument used for centuries to distill liqueurs such as whiskey, gin or rum, but also essential oils such as lavender or rosemary essential oil.
Specifically, a special drain still is characterized by having a special inlet to introduce liquids into the mixture to distill that stills of other types lack.
The alembic that we see in the photo is the demonstration of the manufacturing capacity that we have in Cobrelis, and we adapt to the client’s requests.
It is a 300-liter cylindrical alembic, with a rectification lens, designed for the distillation of liquids, with a 3 ”upper inlet and a 3” drain. It is a commission from a client in Bolivia.
Parts of a special drain copper alembic?
Like all copper stills, the drain alembic has the following parts:
- Pot: lower part of the still where the elements for distillation are placed.
- Hood: upper part of the still where the steam comes out.
- Serpentine Cube: the steam expelled by the hood is mixed with the mixture in the squid and through a tube the extract passes to the serpentine cube, where the final result is.

What can you distill with a special drain still?
The idea is that you can introduce liquids into the mixture to distill in the copper pot still. The liquids you want to use depends on the distilled product. You can create your own homemade gin, whiskey or rum.
But in addition to distilling alcoholic beverages with an alembic, you can also obtain essential oils such as lavender oil, rosemary oil, oregano oil or tea tree oil.
